This weekend we slept in my parents screen porch with the birds to wake us. Our blankets and pillows took on the smell and dampness of the dew and in the morning we made eggs and sausages and two pots of coffee.

we are as far from the ocean as maybe any city can be, which breaks my heart usually. But we live near beautiful and giant lakes and one windy day last week, when I rode the waves made by fierce gusts and imagined the tide, it wasn't too hard to pretend that just over the horizon was more horizon and then, europe. I thought of how, then, the babe growing in me and I would feel the same; floating, letting the pulse of something bigger move us.
